A few weeks ago, I saw the DVD of the 2009 film Land of the Lost for $5 at a Walmart, and I decided to pick it up. I had been wanting to see this film for awhile. I’m a pretty big fan of Will Ferrell and I think Anna Friel (the female lead in this film) is hot.
At the beginning of the movie, there a really nice, funny scene involving Will Ferrell and Matt Laure (of NBC’s “The Today Show“). The movie gets off to a good start, and I’m thinking, “Hey, this might turn out to be a pretty good movie.” Unfortunately things just go downhill from here.
When they finally get to this “land of the lost”, the movie becomes quite unwatchable. Just about every 5 minutes I had to use every piece of my willpower not to turn this movie off. Generally, I find Will Ferrell to be a funny guy, but most of his jokes just fall flat in this movie. Not even Anna Friel wearing a cute little outfit that shows great cleavage can save this film from being a bad movie (she’s also involved in numerous sex jokes that are done in bad taste).
Now to be fair, besides the Matt Laure scene at the beginning of the film, I did find two other scenes to be laugh out loud funny. One scene involved Danny McBride (looking at the DVD cover, he’s the guy on the left) and Will Ferrell coming to a large crystal structure and singing an iconic pop song from 1998. The other scene is when Ferrell leaves a nest of flying dinosaurs (Pterodactylus?) and he and the gang have to do something to make these dinosaurs fall asleep. Other than those scenes, I didn’t think the movie was funny at all.
This movie is based on the TV show of the same name. I’ve never seen any episodes of the TV show, but if the TV show was campy, perhaps the filmmakers of this Land of the Lost film were deliberately trying to make a bad movie, to keep it in the same spirit as the TV show.
If that’s the case, that would explain why it feels like the filmmakers didn’t put much effort into making this film into a good movie. The acting is bad, the plot is bad, the CGI special effects are bad, the jokes & comedy bits are bad, etc…
In conclusion, this Land of the Lost DVD is not worth the $5 I paid for it. Unless you’re a hardcore fan of campy (and/or bad) movies, I definitely would not recommend anyone buy this movie, even if the DVD is only $5 at Walmart. In fact, I wouldn’t even recommend anyone pay money to rent this film. If you really want to watch this movie, I would suggest watching it on Netflix (if they have it) or any similar service.
